The “I’m Fine” Checklist: Things You Might Actually Need Instead

“How are you?”

“I’m fine.”

Ah yes.

The famous female response.

Three tiny words that can mean anything from “I’m genuinely okay” to “If one more person asks me for something, I may move to another country.”

Sometimes you’re not fine.

You’re just functioning.

And there’s a difference.

So before you dramatically announce that you need to completely reinvent your life, let’s perform a quick inspection.

Have you eaten?

No, coffee doesn’t count.

Neither does the two bites of toast you ate while standing next to the sink.

Eat something.

Preferably something that once had nutritional value.

Have you slept?

Be honest.

Did you get enough sleep or did you stay awake scrolling through videos until midnight and then spend the morning wondering why you’re exhausted?

Your phone isn’t going to tuck you in.

Have you had water?

That headache might not be a personal attack from the universe.

Drink some water.

Have you been alone for five minutes?

Not scrolling.

Not answering messages.

Not doing chores.

Just… quiet.

Sometimes your brain doesn’t need a solution.

It needs everyone to shut up for a minute.

Have you laughed recently?

A proper laugh.

The ugly kind.

The kind where you snort and immediately lose whatever dignity you had left.

Highly recommended.

Have you spoken to someone?

You don’t need a TED Talk.

Sometimes you just need to say, “I’m having a crap day.”

And hear someone respond, “Same.”

Instant community.

Have you been trying to do too much?

If your to-do list looks like it was written by someone who hates you, perhaps it’s time to edit it.

You are one person.

Not an underpaid household management corporation.

Finally: when was the last time you did something just because you enjoyed it?

Not because it was productive.

Not because it benefited someone else.

Not because it was on your list.

Just because you liked it.

That’s important too.

So next time you say, “I’m fine,” pause for a second.

Maybe you are.

But maybe you need food.

Sleep.

Water.

A cuddle.

A laugh.

A break.

Or eight glorious hours where nobody asks you where anything is.

And honestly?

That last one sounds medically necessary.
