Everyone tells you to take care of yourself.
“Set boundaries!”
“Make time for yourself!”
“Learn to say no!”
Sounds lovely.
Until you actually do it.
Because apparently the moment you start taking care of yourself, several people in your life develop a sudden and mysterious condition called:
“But why can’t you?”
You say no to something and suddenly you’re the villain.
You don’t answer your phone immediately.
Concern.
You want a quiet weekend.
Suspicion.
You decide you’re not available to solve somebody else’s problem at 10 p.m.
Outrage.
You start protecting your peace and discover that some people were extremely comfortable with you having none.
Oops.
Then there’s the guilt.
Oh, the guilt.
You sit down for twenty minutes and immediately your brain starts listing everything you could be doing.
Laundry.
Emails.
Groceries.
That cupboard you’ve been meaning to organise since 2019.
And somehow you feel guilty for watching a television programme while sitting down.
Girl.
Sit. Down.
The laundry will still be there.
It has been there before.
It will be there after you.
It has no dreams. It can wait.
Taking care of yourself also means discovering that “no” is a complete sentence.
You don’t need a 14-minute explanation, three apologies and a PowerPoint presentation.
“No, I can’t” is enough.
And here’s the really strange part:
The more you practise choosing yourself, the easier it becomes.
Not because everyone suddenly understands.
Some people won’t.
But because you finally understand something important:
Your needs are allowed to exist too.
You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to collapse before you’re allowed to slow down.
You don’t have to make everyone happy before you get to be happy.
And you certainly don’t need permission to take a breath.
So go ahead.
Cancel the thing.
Put your phone on silent.
Have the bath.
Eat the nice chocolate.
Say no.
Go to bed early.
Protect your energy like it’s the last slice of pizza at girls’ night.
Because here’s the thing nobody tells you:
Taking care of yourself might disappoint a few people.
But constantly abandoning yourself to keep everyone else comfortable?
That gets very expensive.
And you deserve better.
