Your Phone Is Stealing Your Attention — And You Keep Handing It Over

You pick up your phone to check the time.

Twenty-seven minutes later, you know what a woman in Canada had for breakfast, you’ve watched a stranger reorganise her fridge and you’re emotionally invested in a dog you’ve never met.

You still don’t know what time it is.

We’ve all been there.

Our phones are brilliant.

They keep us connected, entertained, informed and occasionally convinced that we should completely change our kitchen because someone on TikTok has a nicer fruit bowl.

But sometimes we don’t use our phones.

Our phones use us.

A quick scroll becomes an hour.

A notification interrupts dinner.

A message interrupts a conversation.

You wake up and check your phone before you’ve even remembered your own name.

And suddenly your brain has consumed 47 pieces of information before breakfast.

No wonder we’re tired.

The good news?

You don’t need to throw your phone into the ocean.

Although the fantasy is lovely.

Try making tiny changes instead.

Turn off unnecessary notifications.

Your phone does not need to announce every single thing happening on the internet.

Keep it away from your bed.

If your alarm is on your phone, congratulations — you’ve discovered the most dangerous object in the bedroom.

Put it somewhere that requires you to physically stand up.

Create phone-free moments.

Dinner.

A walk.

The first 20 minutes after waking up.

The last 30 minutes before bed.

Start small.

And here’s one of my favourites:

When you feel the urge to check your phone, ask yourself:

“What was I actually about to do?”

Because sometimes you picked it up automatically.

And that little pause can be surprisingly powerful.

Your phone isn’t evil.

You don’t need to become a woman who owns a wooden toothbrush and lives in a cottage with no Wi-Fi.

You just need to remember that your attention belongs to you.

You get to decide where it goes.

And perhaps today, instead of giving 45 minutes of it to strangers arguing in the comments section…

Give five minutes to yourself.

Your brain will probably thank you.

And yes, you can check the dog afterwards.
