My Brain Has 47 Open Tabs and I Can’t Find the One Playing Music

A completely unscientific investigation into the female brain

You know that feeling when you finally get into bed?

The house is quiet. The dishes are mostly under control.

Nobody is asking you where their socks, charger, keys, jacket or other mysterious possession has disappeared to.

You finally close your eyes.

And your brain goes:

“Excellent. Now that you’re comfortable, let’s discuss everything.” 😐

Suddenly you’re thinking about:

  • The email you forgot to send.
  • The thing you need to buy tomorrow.
  • Whether you actually locked the front door.
  • That conversation you had three days ago.
  • That OTHER conversation you had in 2017.
  • Something embarrassing you said when you were 23.
  • Whether your cat has enough food.
  • Whether you should start exercising again.
  • Why you haven’t played your guitar in ages.
  • That business idea.
  • The other business idea.
  • The thing you were supposed to do for the first business idea.
  • Whether you replied to that WhatsApp.

And, for absolutely no logical reason whatsoever…

Whether dinosaurs had feathers. 😂

Excuse me, brain.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT PRIORITY HERE?

Apparently, my brain has no closing time.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my brain is basically a laptop with approximately 47 tabs open.

One is playing music.

I don’t know which one.

I’ve tried closing them.

It made things worse. 😂

And somewhere between running a home, having a family, trying to be a decent human being, remembering everybody else’s stuff and attempting to build something of your own, you realise something:

You’re carrying an astonishing amount of invisible information.

Things nobody sees.

Things nobody thanks you for.

Things you remember simply because someone has to.

And then there’s the overthinking.

Ohhhhhh, the overthinking.

Women can turn one innocent sentence into a full Netflix series.

Someone says:

“Okay.”

And suddenly we’re wondering:

What did they mean by okay?

Was it a normal okay?

An angry okay?

A disappointed okay?

Was there a period after okay?

Why did they use a period?

Are they upset?

Should I ask?

No.

Don’t ask.

Maybe I’m imagining it.

But what if I’m not?

I’ll just leave it.

But now I’m thinking about it. 😂

WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS?

And here’s something I’ve had to remind myself of…

You don’t have to solve everything tonight.

You don’t have to have the perfect plan.

You don’t have to know exactly where your life is going.

You don’t have to answer every question your brain throws at you.

And you certainly don’t need to become a completely new, improved, highly productive version of yourself by Monday morning.

Sometimes you are allowed to simply say:

“Not today, brain.”

And close the imaginary laptop.

Even if it takes you another 37 minutes to stop thinking. 😂

Especially when you’re starting something new.

I’ve been reminded of this myself lately.

I’m building You’re Worth It.

I’m excited.

I’m nervous.

I’m full of ideas.

Some days I feel like:

“YES! I’ve got this!”

And other days I’m staring at my screen thinking:

“Who gave me permission to start a business? Should someone stop me?” 😂

But I’m learning that you don’t need to feel completely confident before you begin.

Sometimes you begin while you’re terrified.

Sometimes you learn while you’re doing.

Sometimes you Google things.

Sometimes you make mistakes.

Sometimes you have a brilliant idea at 2 a.m. and think you’re a genius…

…and then read your notes the next morning and wonder who allowed you near technology. 😂

And that’s okay.

Maybe you’re doing the same thing.

Maybe you’re starting a business.

Maybe you’re starting over.

Maybe your children have grown up and you’re wondering what this next chapter of your life is supposed to look like.

Maybe you’re trying to find the woman you were before everyone needed something from you.

Maybe you’re exhausted.

Maybe you’re excited.

Maybe you’re all of those things at once.

Maybe your house is messy.

Maybe your inbox is terrifying.

Maybe your bank account would appreciate a small prayer.

Maybe you’re pretending you know exactly what you’re doing. 😂

Welcome.

Pull up a chair.

We’re probably all winging it.

So tonight…

When your brain starts opening those 47 tabs again, try giving yourself a little grace.

You don’t have to figure out your entire life before you go to sleep.

Tomorrow is allowed to have some of the answers.

And if it doesn’t?

We’ll figure that out too.

One ridiculous day at a time.

Because you don’t need to have everything together to be worthy.

You don’t need to be perfectly organised.

You don’t need to be endlessly productive.

You don’t need to be the strongest woman in every room.

You just need to remember something important:

You are already enough.

Even with the messy house.

The unanswered messages.

The unfinished to-do list.

The weird thoughts.

The overthinking.

The dreams.

The doubts.

The 47 open tabs.

And that one bloody song you still can’t find. 😂❤️

You’re worth it.

Always. 🌸

Okay, girl… your turn. 😂

Be honest:

What’s the most completely random thing your brain has decided to worry about when you were supposed to be sleeping?

Tell us in the comments.

Because I’m pretty sure we’re going to discover that women’s brains are all running the same software…

…and none of us were given the password. 😂🌸
